In India you are faced with moments that induce a tug-of-war in your chest. To visit the Haji-Ali-Dargah, you must first walk a run way strip of human desperation: a sea-wall lined with leprosy and beggars--people falling apart. Also scattered along the strip are the tiniest muslim children; pairs of eyes wrapped in lumps of fabric. They sit alone, with tins for money. The tug-of-war begins: your mind vs your heart. You know these children are placed here to make money, which creates an industry of child abuse and abduction. Do you support the system by paying the desperate, hoping the change will legitimately feed this child? Sometimes you succumb to your heart and open your wallet. You tell yourself that it's an ingrained reality, one in this moment, you alone can't change. People stare and shake their heads in disapproval: you walk away feeling torn. Or you ignore the children: then you walk away feeling torn.
